Nevada's licensed dental professionals operate under a legal framework of statutes (NRS) and administrative regulations (NAC) that establish licensure and permitting requirements, standards of practice, and enforcement authority. The Nevada State Board of Dental Examiners administers and enforces Nevada’s Dental Practice Act, NRS 631 and NAC 631, which governs the practice of dentistry, dental hygiene, dental therapy, and expanded function dental assisting in Nevada. These laws address scope of practice, licensing and permitting, continuing education, professional conduct, and the Board’s authority to investigate complaints and take disciplinary action when warranted. A summary of the Board's regulatory history can be viewed on the About the Board webpage.
Licensees should also be aware that other Nevada state agencies regulate additional areas that may apply to dental practice settings. Depending on the services provided, dental professionals and facilities may be subject to requirements related to controlled substances, health care records, facility operations, radiology and radiation-producing equipment, communicable disease reporting, and medical waste and sharps disposal. These requirements may be enforced by agencies outside the Dental Board, and licensees are responsible for understanding and complying with all laws and regulations applicable to their practice.
